Its makers claim it is the ?world?s first sports activity coupe?.? Well, it is certainly the first in thisso-called upmarket segment, but what about the Toyota RAV 4, which couldarguably be labeled the first SAC??Perhaps a moot point, but whereas the Japanese model is firmlyestablished ? particularly among the highly-impressionable youth market ? theX6 is trying to position itself as a top-line four-wheel drive model withstylish lines, and the very latest technology.

Witha variety of award-winning engines, both gasoline and diesel, the X6 doeshowever have a lot to offer.

Forthe first time in BMW?s history, the entire model range is turbocharged with aquartet of forced induction powerplants.?Its flagship is a twin-turbo V8 producing a massive 408 bhp (300 kW) at5,500 rpm. Surprisingly perhaps, this 4.4 liter model makes the X6 the mostpowerful production model in the X-series range.? In addition, it chucks out a teeth-pulling600 Nm of torque from 1,800 rpm through to 4,500 rpm and offers up a sprinttime from 0-100 km/h in just 5.4 seconds. Top speed, as always with Europeanvolume cars is electronically limited to 250 km/h.

Tooptimize packaging, allowing a relatively low hood line, the twin turbos andthe catalytic converter are located within the vee of the engine.? In addition, the location of theturbochargers allowed the improved performance from the turbos withoutcompromising the front suspension layout.

Secondup is the 3.5 gasoline motor ? International Engine of the Year 2007 winner ?while it is the diesel variants that are expected to be the biggest sellers inthe X6 range.? The X6 30d has a singleturbocharger six-cylinder diesel engine delivering a healthy 235 bhp at 4,000rpm and 520 Nm of torque.

Otherimportant features incorporated in the X6 include a brake energy regenerationsystem, incorporating an intelligent alternator control, which both improve thefuel economy.? This is achieved as thealternator reduces drag on the engine by only engaging when required to chargethe battery.? Additionally, the energygenerated by the engine on over-run ? under braking or going downhill ? whichwas previously wasted, will now be used to charge the battery.

Other?green? measures include low rolling resistance tires, low-friction transmissionfluids and a high-precision injection system to optimize combustion within themotor.

TheX6 is the third X-series model in the BMW range and is built in the States, asis the X5 which is produced at Spartanburg, South Carolina, while the X3 is assembledby the Magna Corporation of Canada in Austria.?It is significant that German manufacturers, notably BMW, Mercedes-Benzand, to a limited extent, Porsche, are looking overseas for productioncapabilities; the strength of the euro is clearly one of their principalconcerns, but to some extent the US is their major market ? particularly forcompact SUVs ? and logistics and economics definitely come into play.

TheX6 range is well-equipped with a whole host of standard equipment, includingclimate control, and electric seats, while the top-of-the-range model hasself-leveling rear suspension and Nevada leather upholstery.

Otherfeatures include dynamic stability control ? essential in these days ofvariable climate conditions ? Xenon headlamps, front and rear park distancecontrol, sports suspension and a six-speed auto transmission with steeringwheel-mounted paddles.? The famous BMWiDrive is fitted to all models but to the average driver it is far tocomplicated to operate.? Best leave it onfactory settings.

Themodel range launches in May this year, although no prices have been announcedjust yet.? Undoubtedly it will beconsiderably higher than the RAV4 but it looks pretty good all the same.
