Nissan Murano PDF Print E-mail

The name Murano is taken from an island off the coast ofVenice, the home of Italian glassmaking since 1291.? Glass production was moved to Murano from themain part of Venice because its production inevitably posed quite a fire hazardand the buildings of Venice were constructed mostly of wood.

The Nissan Murano presents no such hazards and is a solid, yet compact crossover SUV with an attractive overall design and a choice of twogasoline engines. The design is clearly influenced by Nissan?s alliance withRenault and is more European than Japanese.

The first Murano was introduced in 2002 and received wideacclaim, yet it did not do particularly well in Asia.? The new-for-2009? model, launched in August this year is amajor step forward in all areas and is already on sale in Thailand.

Interestingly, the Murano has received a top award from theUSA?s Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).? The award cited the Murano?s ability towithstand impacts to the front, side and rear.?To receive the top honor, a vehicle must earn the highest rating in allthree tests. Performing well in the frontal test is based on a 64 km/h frontaloffset crash into a deformable barrier. Side testing is based on performancewhen the side of a vehicle is struck by a barrier moving at 50 km/h, rating theeffectiveness of standard front and rear head curtain air bags and standardfront-seat mounted torso air bags. Rear tests simulate a collision of astationary vehicle struck in the rear at 32 km/h.

The top-of-the-range Murano receives a 235 bhp (173 kW) 3.5liter V6, while the entry-level model has a 2.5 four-cylinder motor pushing outa respectable 163 bhp. Torque outputs are also pretty healthy at 318 and 245 Nmrespectively. While the big V6 has permanent four-wheel drive, the smallermodel is two-wheel drive.? Both haveautomatic transmission, the 4x4 constantly variable transmission (CVT); the two-wheeldrive a straightforward four-speed.?

Nissan was one of the first automakers to recognize thebenefits of CVT - smooth and responsive driving performance combined withseamless acceleration. The first CVT was introduced by Nissan in 1992, and thecompany continues to promote the multiple advantages of the technology. In2002, Nissan engineers found a solution to adapt CVT to high-torque engines anddelivered the world?s first CVT for engines up to 3.5 liters.

Both Murano models are comprehensively equipped, with adecent Bose sound system, bi-Xenon headlamps, six airbags and sumptuous leatherupholstery.? Other rather nice featuresinclude the extensive use of aluminum throughout the interior and speciallysited air ducts for rear passengers to ensure they maintain their cool.? Both models also get a panoramic sunroof anda six-CD autochanger.

Since the launch of the original in 2002, the Murano hasbecome one of Nissan?s best-selling SUVs. Particularly when compared with thetruck-based models in Nissan?s line up, the Murano?s car-based platform andon-road type of all-wheel drive system gives far more user-friendlycharacteristics. It is more of a sedan than a typical 4x4, hence the termcrossover.? Both performance and handlingare sedan-class, with a superb ride and excellent roadholding, thanks to itsindependent front and rear suspension, instead of the live axle arrangements ofmany of its competitors.

It is a striking vehicle, with exceptionally goodlooks from any angle.? And its highseating position allows excellent visibility in all conditions. Although it isquite highly priced, it is a safe, comfortable and highly desirable motor carof which you could be proud. The 3.5 liter 4WD Murano is priced at 4,400,000baht, the 2WD at 2.95m baht.?
